The BFRO Bigfoot Sightings Pt. 2

[00:00:00] Hi there, and welcome to Out There: A Cryptid Podcast. I'm Josh, and today we're taking another trip through the BFRO database, looking at some of the creepiest Bigfoot reports from one state. From eerie screams in the woods to a trail camera photo, and even mysterious footprints. This one is chocked full of evidence. Let's dive in. We'll get into the BFRO Bigfoot Sightings Pt. 2 right after this.

[00:01:01] We've covered BFRO sightings before when we looked at the beautiful state of New Jersey, but for those of you who may be new here, or just need a little refresher, the BFRO, aka the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization, was founded in 1995 by Matt Moneymaker, who you probably know from Finding Bigfoot. Their whole goal is to collect, investigate, and catalog reported Bigfoot sightings from all across North America, and over the years, they're going to be a bigfoot sighting.

[00:01:35] Over the years, it's become one of the biggest public databases for Bigfoot reports out there. No pun intended. And honestly, one of the reasons I like using the BFRO so much is that you don't just get a witness saying, hey, I saw Bigfoot.

[00:01:52] A lot of these reports also include a follow-up investigation, where a BFRO researcher talks to the witness, goes back to the location, and even tries to rule out other explanations before the report is added to the database.

[00:02:08] They also rank the sightings based on the quality of the evidence. So, Class A reports are the strongest visual sightings, Class B reports are a little less clear, and Class C reports are things like footprints, sounds, or other evidence without someone actually getting a good look at the creature itself.

[00:02:28] But today, we are picking another state in America. But I thought it would be fun to include a little whimsy, so I put all of the states and some Canadian provinces in a little spinny wheel. So, let's see which it picked. We're heading all the way up to one of the northernmost states in the country.

[00:02:54] A beautiful place known for its dense forests, rugged coastline, charming little towns, and according to some people, maybe even Bigfoot. Alright, we're starting this episode off with a bang, because this first report actually comes with photo evidence of footprints. It takes place on February 14th, 2017, in York County, near South Berwick, Maine.

[00:03:25] I was hiking in the woods, doing occasional whoops and wood knocks, to try to elicit a response. It felt so squatchy from the moment I got there, but I got no response to anything. I was about an hour into my trek, and I see off the beaten path a series of footprints. The snow had stopped yesterday, and I tell you, these prints were fresh.

[00:03:50] I am thinking I just missed the squatch by a matter of minutes, or hours. So close. Well, let me tell you what. These things were 12 inches long, and the stride between steps was measured at 8 feet. The line of prints was straight, just like you see with other evidence of a Bigfoot trail. It was insane. There was no other footprints around.

[00:04:20] I followed these about a quarter mile into the depths of the woods and off the beaten path. The snow was up past my knees at some point, but how could I stop following this epic trail? I could see some prints more clearly than others. I could see toe outlines and the heel in a few. I have pictures and videos to share with you. By the looks of the size of the prints and the distance in stride, this seems like an adult Sasquatch.

[00:04:50] These things were huge. The sun was setting and my phone was dying, so to my dismay, I had to turn around and get back to the path before dark. Otherwise, I would have followed those tracks until they led me to whatever made them. And we know what made those beasts. This is the best day ever. My very first Bigfoot evidence and experience, and I couldn't be happier. There is literally nothing else this could be.

[00:05:17] It is an amazing and documented Bigfoot footprint trail. Now, you can head over to Instagram to see the photos and even the videos that she included with her report of these tracks. And they are pretty cool. But BFRO investigator Jeff Shepard from Massachusetts reached out to the witness and had her send over the photos and videos she had taken.

[00:05:44] The question he had was what size the prints were since there were no measurements in the photos. She told him she used a small flashlight in one of the photos for scale and estimated the stride by comparing it to her own. The tracks also had sunk somewhere between a foot and a foot and a half into the snow, meaning it was something fairly heavy walking.

[00:06:07] And she even said that she said she could clearly make out the toe impressions and heel strikes in several of the prints. So then a few days later, Jeff went back to the park to see if he could find the tracks for himself. But sadly, of course, Mother Nature had other plans. Another winter storm had come through and dumped close to two feet of fresh snow, completely covering the original trackway. But here's the craziest part.

[00:06:33] While he was out there, Jeff actually found another unusual track. And he measured those prints at about 15 inches long and 7 inches wide, with a stride of roughly 53 inches. He also pointed out that the prints were almost perfectly in line with each other, instead of being staggered like you'd expect from most animals. So this seems to be either the same creature or a very similar one that is using the same walking paths.

[00:07:03] At the end of his report, Jeff says he thought the witness was honest and credible. Obviously, he wasn't able to examine the original tracks, but they had already been buried. But he did have these new ones and her photos. Plus, the fact that he got his own tracks and had his own sightings means that this whole thing felt very genuine.

[00:07:30] Alright, for the next sighting, we are heading back in time, but staying in the same county. This sighting comes from June 25th, 1974. In the spring of 1974, my girlfriend and I were returning from a motorcycle rally at Laconia, New Hampshire. It was late at night, and we decided to camp out. I found a small gravel road, and we found a remote place to set up my small two-man tent.

[00:07:59] This area is referred to as the Pine Barrens in the Kennebunkport area of Maine. It is very thick shrub pine growth. About an hour or so after camping, I could hear movement near the tent, but was not too concerned because there is a lot of wildlife in the barrens. The movement got closer, and there was this really pungent odor. I thought, uh-oh, it's a bear.

[00:08:25] But what was still not concerned, but was still not concerned, as black bears are mostly just curious and usually will not bother you. I should add here that I have spent a lot of time in the woods, as my mother and father were both Maine guides, and the woods were my life. I have heard all the noises that wildlife makes in different seasons. I consider myself a good tracker and know the habits of animals. Then it happened.

[00:08:54] Whatever it was let out a scream that made every hair on my body stand straight out, and nearly gave me a heart attack. I am saying to myself, this is no bear. Now the girlfriend is awake and in hysterics. I'm trying to quiet her so I can keep track of whatever it is. It moved close enough to the tent so I could actually feel its movement through the ground and hear it breathing.

[00:09:22] This activity went on for about 20 minutes, and it went away. After a sleepless night and at first light, I crawled out to investigate. I looked for tracks. There were no clear imprints, only impressions in the grass, and some broken ferns, etc. The impressions were about half, again, as big as my own. I wear a size 11. I followed the tracks. They ended at a cliff that was about 30 feet high.

[00:09:51] I wanted to investigate further, but the girlfriend was having none of it, and wanted to leave. I went back a couple of times by myself to the area, but never found any further signs. This all would have been disturbing enough, but that year I was leisurely sipping a beer and watching a documentary on Bigfoot with my girlfriend when they played a recording that was supposed to be a Bigfoot scream. You guessed it. Hair straight out.

[00:10:19] And an exclamation from both of us of, Oh, shh. If that was Bigfoot, then we would have been very close to him. This sighting was investigated by BFRO member John Perry. Now, he doesn't really include any investigation notes, but did say, quote, Regarding the incident in Kennebunk, the witness thought that the animal was two-legged.

[00:10:47] It was close enough to the tent that he could hear it breathing heavily. The animal stayed in the vicinity for about an hour. Now, for me, the thing that stood out the most was who the witness was. Because he says both of his parents were main guides. He grew up in the woods, and he knew the sounds and habits of the local wildlife. So, when he says, quote, This is no bear, that definitely stands out. But, honestly,

[00:11:16] the creepiest part of the whole story is the fact that they hear the Saswatch scream on the documentary years later and just know it was the exact same sound they had heard outside their tent that night. I mean, that's terrifying. The other thing that's interesting, specifically because we've talked about New Jersey Bigfoot sightings around the Pine Barrens area, this part of Kennebunk is known as the same sort of forest like the Pine Barrens in New Jersey.

[00:11:45] So, it makes sense that we'd have two Bigfoot sightings in similar areas because of the dense forest habitat there that could conceal their identity. Now, for this next story, we're heading about two hours north to Oxford County. And this one is a very recent report. It was reported on August 2nd, 2025. My husband and I today were driving through

[00:12:15] and out of Grafton State Park when a large brown biped came out of the woods and ran across the street. The car in front of us was closer to it and had to brake, so it was clear they saw it too. It was pretty large, all brown and moving very quickly. One thing of note is the way it carried its arms, almost behind it as it ran across. Which seemed odd and unhuman-like.

[00:12:45] I had my husband drive up to the place where we saw the figure to make sure there weren't any people on the side of the road or any parking areas. At the spot where the figure crossed, it's fully outside of the park. No parking lots, sidewalks, or any place someone could have gone other than directly into the woods. Even though not much time passed from where it crossed ahead and when our car got to the spot, there was nothing

[00:13:14] in the woods or near the side of the road. Now, Jeff Shepard from the first story investigated this one as well and one of the things he really wanted to nail down was the size of the creature. The witness estimated it was somewhere between 8 and 9 feet tall and even though it was leaning forward as it ran, she said it still towered over the Subaru that had slammed on its brakes to avoid hitting it. He also asked if there were any chance

[00:13:44] it could have been a local animal like a bear or even a moose. She said absolutely not. She had actually been hoping to see a moose that day so she knew what she was looking for. She described this creature as chocolate brown running on those two legs with a huge head, muscular build and incredibly long arms trailing behind it as across the road. At the end of his report the investigator says he found her

[00:14:13] to be very credible but he also mentions that her husband had always been skeptical of Bigfoot and thought they only lived out in the Pacific Northwest but after this encounter they both walked away believing they had seen something they couldn't explain. Now, one last thing that I thought was really interesting about this location is Oxford County actually has more BFRO reports than any other county in Maine. The investigator even notes that there are

[00:14:43] another 19 reports from the area that aren't publicly available because they either are second-hand accounts or are still being documented. So while this might sound like a one-off encounter it actually happened in one of the biggest Bigfoot hotspots in the entire state of Maine. More on the BFRO Bigfoot sightings part two right after this. Let's stay in Oxford with this next story that was reported

[00:15:12] on July 10th, 2001. Mark, the witness was super detailed on the exact location of his campsite where he said he heard something that terrified him. Well, I feel queasy even writing this. I went on a camping trip alone for two nights this summer from July 10th to the 12th near Lower Richardson's Lake by South Arm, Maine. I expected the moose, deer, beavers, chipmunks, woodchucks,

[00:15:42] and the wild birds. I did not expect the unusual stormy local weather or the unusual sounds I heard. It seemed to rain from the first day I set up camp until I left early on the afternoon of the 12th. I was camped roughly in between the South Arm campgrounds and the summit of Elephant Mountain, very close to the Appalachian Trail. I had never been in the area before and pretty much blazed my own trail

[00:16:11] into the old reforested lodging area. I set up my tent on a 30 or 40 year old logging road, flat, cut into the side of the mountain. To further specify my location, I would say I was in the saddle at the source of the clear water brook, about 3.4 miles up the left side of the stream. The rain let up for a few hours on the 10th and the 11th in the evenings, long enough for me

[00:16:40] to make a small cooking fire each night. On each night, I heard the most unnatural sounds of my life. My eyes were welling up just writing this. I was in my tent the first night it happened. I had a new micro light, one man tent. It was basically just big enough to lie down in. I had just finished eating a firewarmed MRE when the noises began. It started to rain and I heard,

[00:17:10] down by the pond about 40 yards away, or so beneath the logging road, the deep groaning slash barking noises. I thought, it's a moose, or a wolf. No, I got really scared. I bring a Beretta 9mm with me when I camp alone. And let me tell you, I had white knuckles and a blank round in the chamber

[00:17:39] after that started up. Anyway, after about two minutes of these ugly, scary, deep groaning noises, it stopped. What gets me still to this day is the fact that some of the sounds remind me of recordings that I have heard on old shows about Bigfoot. So, the second night, I hear it again a couple of times and just try to ignore it. Damned if I didn't stay awake the whole night. I got out of there the next day when the rain let up.

[00:18:08] I packed my whole campsite up in five minutes and tromped back down to my car briskly. What gets me to this day is the sound. I want to be honest with you. I did not even consider checking it out or investigating. I did not look for tracks. I did not feel investigative at all. Those noises were enough to scare me out of my wits. So, I don't know what to tell you. I have noises.

[00:18:38] That's it. I do have pics of my campsite and views from my site but that's it really. I could take you right back there again if need be. I haven't mentioned this aloud to anyone. I have put off developing the film on my disposable camera because I know when I see the pics they will remind me of the trip. I just need to tell someone. I suppose you can ignore this if you want but I do feel better just writing it out. Now, this investigation

[00:19:07] was a little different because BFRO's John Perry investigated and he's actually a biologist so he took a much more scientific approach to trying to figure out what the witness had heard. The first thing he did was send the witness recordings of different black bear vocalizations to see if any of them matched. The witness said some of the sounds were actually pretty similar describing what he heard as a deep mournful moan with some kind of growling

[00:19:37] undertone. But he also said there was a higher pitched ending to each call that didn't sound like any of the bear recordings he listened to. And above all else he said the sound was incredibly loud. John didn't stop there though. He actually reached out to Maine state biologists who specializes in black bears and the biologists told him that while black bears can make those similar sounds they usually do it when they're

[00:20:06] frightened or injured. He also said he'd only heard a black bear make that growling undertone once and that was when he was standing extremely close to a mortally wounded bear. Putting everything together John said he couldn't completely rule out a black bear but he also pointed out that the timing of the calls how they were repeated over two nights and especially just how loud they were didn't really fit what you'd normally expect from a brown bear.

[00:20:37] He also points out that Oxford is such a hot spot for Sasquatch activity which we know so while there's no way to know for sure what the witness heard he thought it was a possibility worth considering. And you know I love when we get very specific and scientific when it comes to sightings because I think it's very important to rule out everything and that's exactly what happened in this case and as we can see there still are really

[00:21:07] unanswered questions. Alright we have two more sightings to talk about and this one is crazy because it's multiple people claiming to have seen a Sasquatch. This happened on December 18th 2023. A big storm blew in around 7 a.m and didn't move off until 12.30 a.m it knocked out power to our home sometime around 7 p.m we have a chicken coop about 40 feet from our house

[00:21:36] it is two feet off the ground and 12 by 20 with an entrance door that used to be the front door of our home it was about 8.30 p.m sunset is around 3.30 this time of the year when I was shining my flashlight out in upstairs window when I saw a dark silhouette standing in front of my coop the top of its head was in line with the top of the coop door it was very muscular

[00:22:06] broad shoulders long upper legs with proportionately shorter lower legs it was too narrow at the hips to be a bear we had a black bear and her cub's den the chicken bigger than the coops to be on it it

[00:22:38] turned to run off just before I moved the flashlight given that an average door is about 7 feet high and the coop is 2 feet off the ground that would put it around 9 feet tall What had me looking outside was a sound that I heard on the wind that alarmed me to my core. I had spent the day listening to the wind howling and moaning, but this was different.

[00:23:04] It was guttural, and within the sounds of the wind, but not in sync. It caused a physical reaction. My heart started racing and my stomach went into knots. I was tending to two of my grandkids that were playing with flashlights, mostly shadow puppets. I jumped to my feet and told them to hand me a flashlight and turn the other ones off.

[00:23:30] To shine the flashlight outside through the window, I must put it against the window or it just reflects back. To see out the window, all the other lights must be off. One of our dogs was barking furiously. Before I could tell my daughters what I saw, they'd tell me what they were experiencing downstairs with the two younger children and the dogs. Because the power was out, my youngest daughter was charging her phone in her car.

[00:23:57] She said she went out to get her phone off the charger and felt that somebody was watching her. The feeling was so intense that she stayed in her car a few minutes to look around to see if she could see anyone. When she got out to head back into the house, she only got a few steps away from her car when she heard the same sound I had heard. She said she was instantly terrified and ran into the house.

[00:24:24] The dog was in the window barking as she was coming through the door. My oldest daughter said that when she heard the howl, she saw her dog lift her head and look out the window. Then stood up and started barking frantically. The dog was looking in the opposite direction than my youngest daughter, who had just started to run to the front door. Nobody wanted to charge their phones in the vehicle after that. There was no mistaken identity about the sounds.

[00:24:51] We were in 30 mph winds with 55 mph gusts and a downpour of rain in December. I don't know any animal, domestic or wild, that would be out in that weather. In the morning after sunrise, my oldest daughter went out to the trash bin that is next to the chicken coop. She found the heavy lid was lifted off the bin and set on the back of the bin opposite the direction the wind would have blown it.

[00:25:20] Two large bags of trash were missing and there was a trail of fresh trash into the woods. The critters tear up the trash in the bin and pick out whatever they want. They do not carry 55 gallon trash bags home with them. There are no tracks of any kind because we don't have any soft mud spots. It's either gravel or grass around the entire area of the property.

[00:25:50] Whoa, that one is crazy. But after speaking with the family, BFRO investigator Ontario Richardson pointed out something that really stood out to him. Over the previous few months, the family had gone from having around 30 chickens and 7 turkeys to just 10 chickens and a single turkey. The strange part was they never found bodies or blood, only feathers.

[00:26:20] Between the chickens, the fruit trees on the property, and even the food scraps they regularly tossed out for the cats and crows, Ontario thought the property would have been a pretty dependable food source if something had been coming around over time. Now, what makes this report even more interesting is that Matt Moneymaker himself actually added his own thoughts at the end.

[00:26:45] His theory was that if Sasquatch had already been visiting the property for food, this brutal windstorm may have pushed it even closer to the house looking for shelter. He also brought up something I don't think we've ever heard before and is very interesting. Matt wondered if the whooping wasn't meant to scare the family at all. Instead, he thinks it may have actually been trying to get their attention.

[00:27:14] His idea is that if these creatures are as intelligent as some researchers believe, they could recognize that people often help animals during severe weather, and in very rare situations, might even seek out that help themselves. One thing he also says that's interesting, and you can take this however you'd like,

[00:27:37] is that if someone lives in a remote area and has an empty barn or outbuilding during a major storm like this, it might actually be worth leaving it open, setting up a few security cameras, to see if anything comes in looking for shelter. Now, whether you agree with that theory or not, I do think it's really interesting, because it's so different from most Bigfoot reports.

[00:28:05] I mean, usually the idea is that these creatures avoid people at all costs, but in this case in particular, it seems like it was doing the exact opposite. More on the BFRO Bigfoot sightings part 2, right after this. Okay, this is our last sighting we are going to talk about from Maine, and y'all are going to be excited about this one, because it has photo evidence.

[00:28:34] Not of a footprint, but of the actual creature. The sighting comes from Waldo County on November 5th, 2015. There really isn't a huge report from the witness. They just wrote, quote,

[00:29:06] First off, yay baby Bigfoot. But, after the photo was submitted, our good friend Jeff Shepard spoke with the owner of the trail camera. He was a local college student whose family had been hunting this same property for two generations, so they knew the land really well. And Jeff was actually able to view the original image on the SD card, and he added there was a lot more detail visible on that,

[00:29:33] rather than what showed up in the copies that were submitted with the report. He later visited the property himself, went to the exact spot where the picture was taken, and said he couldn't find anything natural that would have created this figure seen in the photo. He also tried to estimate the size of whatever was in the picture by standing in roughly the same spot. But he couldn't say for certain because he wasn't sure if the figure was standing, sitting, or even squatting.

[00:30:01] He then says that he believed it looked healthy, stocky, which like, okay, good for you baby Bigfoot. But also, Jeff added, he believed it was about his same height. Now Jeff didn't give his height, but I guess normal man height. Now, one thing Jeff also included, and again, take this however you'd like, was that the family had experienced a few other strange things on the property over the years.

[00:30:30] They talked about hearing someone faintly calling their names when no one else was around, certain parts of the property giving them an uneasy feeling, and even their black lab refusing to go to certain areas. The property itself is also rumored by locals to be haunted. Now, whether any of this has anything to do with this photo, I'm not sure.

[00:30:56] But I do think it's very interesting that the investigator included it in his report. And that sort of plays into the idea that Bigfoot could be more of a supernatural creature with abilities. But, either way, while investigating, Jeff also found what he believed was an unusual tree X formation that didn't appear to have happened naturally,

[00:31:21] along with several sticks that seemed to be intentionally wedged around the bases of different trees. Again, whether those are actually connected to Bigfoot is up for debate, because it is a common hunting ground. But, they were details he thought that were worthy of documenting. He finishes by saying that he heard about other sightings from hunters in the area that had never been officially reported to the BFRO,

[00:31:50] and after speaking with this young man and his father, he found both of them to be sincere, open-minded, and credible witnesses. So, after going through all of these reports, I think we can all agree it isn't hard to believe that Sasquatch inhabits parts of Maine. I mean, for starters, Maine is one of the most heavily forested states in the entire country. Around 90% of the state is covered in forests,

[00:32:18] and there are millions of acres of wilderness, where you can hike for hours or even days without running into another person. You've got mountains, rivers, lakes, swamps, and just about every kind of habitat you could imagine. And then, of course, you have the Appalachian Mountains. Now, the Appalachian Trail actually comes to an end at Mount Katahdin in Maine. And like we talked about in the last episode,

[00:32:46] if Bigfoot were a species of animal that traveled long distances, a mountain range like the Appalachian would have made a pretty natural travel corridor. It definitely makes these reports a little more interesting, because, just like we saw in New Jersey, they don't completely seem random. They tend to pop up in the same forests, the same mountain ranges, or even in the same remote stretches of wilderness.

[00:33:13] And that's one of my favorite parts about digging through the BFRO database. You stop looking at these as isolated stories, and start seeing the bigger picture.
