[00:01:51] Since we have so many spooky places to talk about today, I want to jump straight into it. And I think it's only fitting that we start with probably one of the most iconic places in Salem. It's also one of the few remaining structures from the time when the apparent witchcraft was running rampant through the town. This is the witch house. So let's start with a little
[00:02:19] bit of history. The witch house, also known as the Jonathan Corwin house, was built sometime in the 17th century. But some of the earliest parts of the structure date back to around the mid-1600s. In 1675, Jonathan Corwin purchased the property and made changes to the house. He would go on to live
[00:02:42] with his wife Elizabeth and their family for more than 40 years. Now, Corwin wasn't just some random guy living in Salem at the time. He was a judge in the town. A judge that was heavily involved in the trials of 1692. Corwin was appointed to the court of Oyer and Terminer, which was responsible for trying the
[00:03:07] people accused of witchcraft. It wasn't just him alone. There were many others, but he did help oversee the proceedings during a period when the accusations were spreading throughout Salem and the surrounding communities. As we know, ultimately 19 people were hanged after being convicted of witchcraft, and while others died in prison and one being pressed to death with stones.
[00:03:34] But here's where things get interesting. Because of Corwin's involvement in the trials, the house has been filled with rumors and strange tales. There have even been claims that some of the examinations of the accused witches took place inside the house itself, although there's no historical evidence confirming that. One of the more interesting stories surrounding the witch house
[00:04:01] has to do with the Corwin family themselves. Jonathan and his wife Elizabeth had 10 children, but sadly, 7 of them died at a young age. And over time, that tragedy became connected to what's sometimes called the Corwin curse. Some stories claim that several of the children died inside the house, and that their deaths could have something to do with the strange activity people are reporting
[00:04:29] today. Now, we do know that 7 of their children died very young, but there's no solid evidence that they all died inside the house, or that anything paranormal was involved. So this is one of those stories where it's hard to separate the actual history from the legends that have built up around it. But that's not the only strange thing people have reported here. There have been stories of people
[00:04:56] hearing voices when nobody else is around, feeling sudden cold spots, or even feeling like something touched them. There's also a story about the voice of a little girl supposedly being heard inside the house. Some people have tried to connect that story to Dorothy Good, who was only four years old when she was accused of witchcraft during the witch trials. She was questioned and imprisoned before
[00:05:24] eventually being released. Now, there's no actual evidence that Dorothy's spirit is connected to the house, but it's an interesting possibility that people have brought up considering everything that happened during the trials. And then there's the story of an old man who's supposedly been seen looking out of different windows around the house. I couldn't find a real detailed account of those
[00:05:49] sightings, so it is hard to say where the story originally came from. But it's another one that's circulated over and over. Now, you'd think with all these stories, paranormal investigators would have been lining up to get into the house. But for a long time, the city wasn't exactly jumping at the opportunity to let people investigate. Back in 2008, a group called Spirit Finders Paranormal
[00:06:15] Investigators actually asked Salem's Park and Recreation Commission for permission to spend the night investigating the witch house. They wanted to bring in cameras, audio recorders, infrared thermometers, and equipment to measure electromagnetic fields. However, the idea wasn't immediately shot down. The commission even discussed whether an investigation might bring more visitors to the house.
[00:06:44] But after looking into the request, they ultimately decided not to allow it. But then, in September of 2010, things took a pretty interesting turn. A representative from the Travel Channel's Ghost Adventures approached the commission about filming inside the house. The plan was to film during the day, interview historians and people who claimed to have experienced paranormal activity,
[00:07:11] and then spend the night investigating the house. And get this, according to the official meeting minutes, the commission actually voted on whether to allow it, and the decision passed by just three votes to two. The production also offered the house $1,000, and the house manager had to be present during the filming.
[00:07:34] So, after previously turning down paranormal investigators, the city was now allowing one of the biggest paranormal shows on television to come in and investigate. The crew filmed inside the house in October of 2010, and the episode aired in February of 2011. That meant Zak Bagans, Nick, and Aaron finally got to spend the night inside a house connected to one of the darkest periods
[00:08:02] in Salem's history. Once the investigation started, the crew immediately started experiencing some pretty interesting things inside the house. One of the first things Zach reported was feeling something touching his arm. Around the same time, he described feeling a cold breeze move through the room, which immediately got his attention.
[00:08:25] But things got even more interesting when the crew started trying to communicate with whatever might be inside the house. They reported capturing what they believed was the voice of a child. And considering the story surrounding Jonathan Corwin's children, or some of the accused witches, that was definitely something that stood out. The crew also brought out their spear box to see if they could get any responses.
[00:08:52] During the session, they heard words like, Bridget, Bishop, Witch, Hanged. Now as we know, Bridget Bishop was the first person executed during the trials. So hearing those words in this house is crazy. The team also had unusual equipment malfunctions, like their batteries being drained, and even the strange smell of apples.
[00:09:20] And to make it even weirder, the word apple came through while they were saying they started smelling the scent. But then, there was the highlight of the episode. That involved a mirror hanging inside the house. The crew reported seeing what looked like a misty shape on the infrared camera. But then, Zack described seeing what appeared to be four people reflected in the mirror.
[00:09:49] Even though there were supposedly only three members of the crew in the room. Now, of course, this is Ghost Adventures. So we do have to take some of this with a grain of salt. The show has definitely had its fair share of questionable evidence, and moments that feel a little exaggerated over the years.
[00:10:12] But this investigation took place back in 2010, during the show's early seasons. So I do think it's worth giving the crew a chance here, and looking at what they claimed to experience. So the witch house remains a staple in Salem, and people to this day still claim to have experiences inside the house. And with so much history surrounding the house,
[00:10:40] who knows what spirit is actually there? Could it be the women and men accused of witchcraft throughout the trials? Or could it be the Corwins themselves, including their children that sadly passed away? Or is it something else that lived on that land either before or after? Who's to say? But the witch house is just the beginning. Because our next location has its own share of strange stories.
[00:11:10] And this time, we're heading somewhere you can actually spend the night. This is the Hawthorne Hotel. Now, this is actually a place I've been during the Salem trip. We stopped in and ate at the restaurant there, and I have to say, their award-winning espresso martini is definitely worth checking out. But while the drinks and food are great, it's the hotel's ghost stories that we were really there for.
[00:11:37] Because apparently, some of the guests checking in here might not be among the living. The Hawthorne Hotel officially opened in 1925. But despite being less than 100 years old, it was built up quite a reputation for paranormal activity. With reports ranging from ghostly apparitions to objects moving on their own. And one of the first things that makes this place interesting
[00:12:07] is the land itself that it was built on. Before the hotel existed, the property was associated with the Salem Marine Society, which is a group of local sea captains who gathered together and helped people in the community who were elderly or in need. When the land was sold for the construction of the hotel, the society made an agreement that they could continue holding their meetings there.
[00:12:31] To this day, the hotel has a replica of a ship's cabin on its roof where the society meets. But because of that history, some people believe the spirits of these old sea captains may still be hanging around the hotel. But that's not the only historical connection people associate with the hauntings. There's also the story of our girl, Bridget Bishop,
[00:12:58] who, again, we know from the first person being executed during the trials. According to local legend, Bishop once owned an apple orchard on the land where the hotel now stands. And some believe her spirit still may be there. Guests have reportedly noticed unexplained smells of apples around the hotel. And I think this is very interesting,
[00:13:28] because what scent did the ghost bros smell while they were at the witch house? So, that's crazy. Now, the exact historical connection between Bishop and the property is a little murky, but it's definitely a part of the hotel's paranormal lore. Now, if you've heard anything about the Hawthorne Hotel, chances are you've heard about room 325. This room, on the third floor,
[00:13:57] is probably the hotel's most famous haunted room. And some of the stories coming from it are pretty creepy. One of the most common reports is the sound of a baby or young child crying in the middle of the night. Guests have described waking up to the sound even when there's no children in the room, or anywhere in the hallway. In one account, a guest said that their mother and grandmother
[00:14:26] were both staying in room 325 when they were woken up around 4 in the morning by the sound of a baby crying, followed by a little girl's laugh. And if children ghosts weren't scary enough, guests have also described waking up to find their bedsheets being pulled off of them. They say it feels like someone is touching them when nobody is there. Other guests experience the lights
[00:14:56] and even the bathroom faucets turning on and off by themselves. More on the hauntings of Salem right after this. Another story that's been retold over the years involves a businessman who was staying in room 325. After his first night, he went down to the front desk and asked if they could politely ask whoever was staying in the adjoining room to keep it down at night. Apparently, he had spent almost all of the night
[00:16:23] listening to the sounds of furniture being moved around and someone walking back and forth. So he could barely get any sleep. The problem was the front desk told him that nobody was staying in the adjoining room. Now, of course, the businessman wasn't believing that because he knew what he had heard the night before. So hotel staff went upstairs with him and unlocked the adjoining room to show him that it was empty.
[00:16:53] And according to the story, it wasn't just that nobody was in there at the time. The room hadn't been occupied at all. The bed was perfectly made and all of the furniture untouched. There are also stories of people feeling like somebody is standing right next to them while they're alone in the room. So if you're planning to stay at the Hawthorne, room 325 might be one to request
[00:17:23] if you're hoping for paranormal experiences or one to avoid if you actually want to get some sleep. But moving up from the third floor, there is another area of the hotel with its own very specific haunting. The sixth floor, around room 612, is known for reports of a woman dressed in white. According to one story, a guest saw a woman wearing a long white dress walking down the hallway toward the room.
[00:17:53] The woman apparently didn't look like she was doing well, so the guest did a double take to check on her. When she turned around, the woman in white had completely disappeared. Other people have reported seeing a woman wandering up and down the same hallway, sometimes stopping near room 612 before vanishing. And things supposedly get even weirder for people who actually stay in the room,
[00:18:21] because some guests have described feeling as though someone is sharing the room with them, even when they're completely alone. There have also been reports of people feeling an icy hand touch them or tug on their hair. Nobody seems to know for certain who this woman is or why she's even associated with the sixth floor, but she's become one of the hotel's most well-known ghost stories.
[00:18:48] But it isn't just two rooms that are haunted. One person staying on the fifth floor described waking up in the middle of the night to what felt like somebody poking them with a finger. They also reported hearing crying outside their door, followed by knocking, whispering, and cold spots. The person said the experience happened over the course of about an hour,
[00:19:16] between three and four in the morning. So, the witching hour. Another guest reported something a little different. While staying in room 504, their sister woke up during the night to the feeling of something walking across the bed. She described it as feeling like a cat had walked across her bed before settling down on her feet. But when she looked, there was no cat there.
[00:19:46] And what's interesting about this report is that it apparently only happened on one of the three nights of their stay at the hotel. So, that's probably the only ghost that we'd all feel happy about having in there. And then we have the stories about objects moving around on their own. One of the more interesting accounts comes from a hotel employee who had finished setting up a room for an event after leaving to collect some supplies.
[00:20:16] The employee returned to find that the tables and chairs had been moved around and rearranged. According to the story, the experience was so unsettling that the employee refused to work night shifts from that point on. And remember those sea captains I mentioned earlier? Well, there's supposedly a little activity connected to them too. Inside the hotel's restaurant, there's a ship's wheel on display.
[00:20:45] And over the years, people have reported seeing it turn back and forth as though somebody were steering it. Some accounts even claim that people have tried stopping the wheel only to see it moving again after they walk away. Now, with all of these stories circulating around the hotel, it probably doesn't surprise you that the Hawthorne has attracted paranormal investigators over the years. But one of the more notable events actually happened
[00:21:15] before the famous television investigation. In 1990, the hotel hosted a seance in the Grand Ballroom, an attempt to connect to the spirit of Harry Houdini. But sadly, he didn't pay a visit. And we'll do a whole episode on that, but if you know why, you know why he didn't show up. But then, in 2007, the team from Ghost Hunters arrived in Salem to investigate both the Lyceum Restaurant
[00:21:44] and the Hawthorne Hotel. The team explored several areas around the hotel, but one of the rooms they investigated was, of course, room 325. Investigators Dustin and Tango spent time inside the room, but they didn't find anything. They did, however, point out a vent located opposite the foot of the bed that might explain why some people feel as though somebody is standing right there. They also noticed that water moving
[00:22:13] through the pipes behind the room's thin walls could potentially account for some of the strange sounds people had reported. But then, in room 628, Steve noticed the chandelier was swinging on its own. He couldn't explain why it would do that. They also reviewed the hotel's guest book, which contained several accounts of strange experiences from people who stayed there over the years, and they were struck by how many reports
[00:22:43] there actually were. However, despite all the stories, the team didn't come away with really anything they considered compelling evidence of paranormal activity. Their investigation was relatively quiet, at least compared with some of the other experiences guests had described. But, it is worth pointing out that not finding anything during one investigation doesn't mean that the place isn't haunted. We know that you can't just
[00:23:13] expect spirits to do anything on command, and there's never a guarantee that anything will happen just because a camera is running. So, from all of the sightings and countless stories, from guests to workers, we can see that the Hawthorne Hotel really is one of the most haunted places in Salem. For our next location, we're heading to Gallows Hill, which is one of the places
[00:23:42] most closely associated with the witch trials. Now, as we know and as we've said, 19 people were hanged after being accused of witchcraft. After they were cut down, the rumor was that their bodies were all put into one pit under the gallows. However, the exact location of the hangings wasn't actually recorded in the official documents we have today. For a long time, people believed the executions took place
[00:24:12] at the very top of Gallows Hill, but in 1867, a historian named Charles Wentworth Upham helped popularize the idea in his book about the trials. But there were some problems with that theory. The hill was steep, which would have made it difficult to transport the condemned prisoners up to the summit, and some of the historical accounts didn't line up with that location. Then,
[00:24:40] in early 1900s, a Salem historian named Sidney Perler began looking into the question himself. After studying old records and maps, he concluded that the executions most likely happened at a rocky outcrop near the base of Gallows Hill, an area now known as Proctor's Ledge. He published his findings in 1921, and the city eventually purchased part of the property in 1936
[00:25:10] to preserve it as a memorial, but no memorial was ever built at the time, and the exact location remained forgotten by the public. It wasn't until 2010 that a new group of researchers came together from the University of Virginia and Salem State University. With the help from geologist Peter Sablock, they started to examine the site using ground-penetrating radar and other technology.
[00:25:40] The team went through hundreds of pages of historical documents and even testimony from people who had witnessed the executions. There was one particularly important account describing a woman who had been held in a house below the hill and could see the hangings from where she was staying. Researchers used modern mapping technology to figure out which locations would have actually been visible from that house, and the results
[00:26:09] supported Parley's theory that the executions took place at Proctor's Ledge rather than at the summit of Gallows Hill. So, the team used that ground-penetrating radar and examined the ground at the site. And this is where things get really interesting. The team found shallow crevices in the rocky ledge, some that might have been large enough to hold human bodies. bodies. However,
[00:26:39] they didn't find any human remains, and they ultimately decided not to excavate the area out of respect for what had happened there. It's most commonly believed that the relatives of the executed may have returned at night to retrieve their loved one's bodies and bury them elsewhere. For example, Rebecca Nurse's family was said to have recovered her body after happened to every victim's remains,
[00:27:10] it's possible that the bodies weren't left at the site for very long. But seeing as this place was filled with such traumatic energy, it's not a surprise that people claim to have paranormal happenings there. One of the more commonly reported experiences around Proctor's Ledge involves the strange feeling of uneasiness. Visitors have described the area as feeling heavy, almost oppressive
[00:27:38] and some say they suddenly feel overwhelmed with sadness. Others say they feel as though they're being watched and report unexplained cold spots even when there's no obvious reason for the temperature to change outside. And then there are reports of strange sounds. Some visitors claim to have heard disembodied voices or eerie wailing coming from the area even though there's
[00:28:08] nowhere the sounds can be coming from. Another story that comes up quite a bit is that of a lady in white. According to local paranormal lore, a woman dressed in white has been spotted around Proctor's Ledge, sometimes appearing only briefly before vanishing. Some accounts describe seeing her figure while others claim to have heard a woman's voice without seeing anyone nearby. And the crazy thing is that the
[00:28:38] lady in white isn't exclusive to Proctor's Ledge, and we've already heard about her visiting the Hawthorne Hotel. It is possible this is not the same spirit at all, but it's also possible that this spirit is just roaming around some of Salem's most haunted places. Visitors have also reported seeing strange lights and glowing orbs in photos taken around the ledge. And it's not just Proctor's Ledge that has a reputation
[00:29:07] for being haunted. The larger Gallows Hill area has its own collection of ghost stories. People have reported seeing shadowy figures and full-bodied apparitions moving through the woods, as well as hearing the overwhelming feeling of dread while walking through that area at night, just like Proctor's Ledge. Now,
[00:29:38] it's important to remember that these reports come largely from modern paranormal accounts and ghost tour lore, and there aren't many detailed first-hand stories. But the stories are out there, no pun intended, and they continue to be shared by people interested in Salem's haunted history, like us. The other thing to note is that since this area is an outdoor public area, it's hard to rule out normal human beings making these noises, either to
[00:30:07] scare people or for whatever their own reasons are. But you also can't rule out the fact that a spirit may be reliving one of the worst moments of either their life or their game, to the Here's a tip, the Apple Sports app. Just pick your favorite teams and get

For our last stop, we're heading back inside to a house that has developed a reputation as one of the most haunted locations in Salem.
[00:31:34] The Joshua Ward House. Which is now home to a boutique hotel called The Merchant. One of the most well-known stories about the house involves a photograph taken back in the 1880s. At the time, a real estate company was using the building as an office. And during a holiday party, an employee took a Polaroid picture of a woman. But when the picture developed,
[00:32:02] he supposedly saw something completely different from what he was expecting. Instead of the light-haired woman he thought he'd photographed, the picture appeared to show a dark-haired woman with very pale skin and some pretty unusual facial features. The photograph eventually made its way into Robert Cahill's book, ghostly haunts and even caught the attention of news outlets.
[00:32:30] Since there have been other reports of a dark-haired woman appearing inside the house, especially on the second floor, some people believe she could be the spirit of a woman who was accused of witchcraft during the trials. Although nobody knows who the figure in the photograph actually is. But apparently, she's not the only one hanging around this place. According to local ghost stories,
[00:32:56] there are supposedly three spirits connected to the Joshua Ward house. And some of the things people have reported experiencing inside are pretty creepy. The house was built on the property that once belonged to George Corwin, who we remember from the witch trials because he was the high sheriff at the time. He was the one that dragged Giles Corwin out of the jail and stoned him to death. He was also the one who supposedly died from Corwin's curse at the age of 30.
[00:33:25] Although it is confirmed he died at 30, just allegedly from the curse. So it's no surprise his spirit would be haunting his old home. Even after his death, there were some pretty strange stories surrounding him. One involved Philip English, a wealthy merchant whose property Corwin had taken during the witch trials. English eventually took legal action to get his belongings back. And after Corwin died,
[00:33:54] rumors started spreading about what happened to his body. One version claims that Corwin's family hid him in the basement because they were worried English might try to get revenge. In reality, though, Corwin was buried in the family tomb on the property. But still creepy to think about his body in the basement. But if you believe the stories, his spirit may still be around.
[00:34:21] And some of the reports connected to the house are pretty disturbing. One story, which appears in Robert Gahl's book Ghostly Haunts, involves a visitor who was upstairs when he suddenly felt like something tighten around his throat. It wasn't just a weird feeling either. According to the account, the pressure became so intense that he could barely breathe. And he felt like his throat had completely closed up.
[00:34:49] He turned around to see what was happening. But there was nobody there. He was completely alone. Because of Corwin's involvement in the witch trials, some people believed that he could be behind these choking experiences. There's even a story that he brought accused witches back to his house to question them, with some versions claiming he strangled them there. But there's no historical evidence that he actually did this,
[00:35:17] just like from Jonathan Corwin, his uncle. So that part seems to have grown out of the legend surrounding him. Not the truth, maybe. And Corwin isn't the only historical figure whose spirit is supposedly connected to the house. Another one is Giles Corey, who, as we talked about earlier, was pressed to death after refusing to enter a plea when he was accused of witchcraft.
[00:35:45] People who worked in the building have reportedly experienced some strange things, including books being pulled off shelves and sudden cold spots in rooms that were otherwise warm. There are also stories about candles being found completely melted, even though nobody had lit them. And apparently, some of these candles were found melted into the shape of the letter S.
[00:36:13] Now, nobody really knows what to make of that, but some people have wondered if it could have something to do with Sheriff Corwin. And according to the stories, these strange occurrences have been blamed on Giles' spirit, possibly because of what happened to him during the trials because of Corwin. But then we have the woman from the photograph who supposedly has a bit of a temper herself.
[00:36:41] Beyond the photo, there have been reports of dark-haired women appearing on the second floor. And some people have claimed to leave the house with scratches across their chest. Others have described feeling like they're being watched, even when nobody else is around. Some believe this woman could be connected to one of the accused during the trials. And because of their reports of scratches and other strange encounters,
[00:37:10] there's speculation that she could be responsible for some of the more aggressive activity inside the house. Maybe because she's pissed that she was wrongfully accused of witchcraft and most likely killed for it, but that's my two cents. But it brings us back to the choking experiences. While some believe Corwin is responsible, others have wondered if the woman could actually be behind them instead.
[00:37:39] If she was someone who suffered because of the trials, it's not hard to see why people have connected the stories. But of course, we don't know who she is or whether any of these experiences are connected to even the same spirit. So between the choking reports, books supposedly flying off the shelves, candles melting for no apparent reason into shapes, and strange photographs, there's a lot going on in this house.
[00:38:09] And with that, I say we call it a night. But don't worry, because next week we're staying here in Salem to check out even more haunted locations around town. And here's the crazy thing. We still won't be able to cover every single place that has haunted stories. Because there's that many. Which really makes you wonder what it is about Salem that seems to attract so many ghost stories.
[00:38:38] Could it be the sheer amount of tragedy and trauma that took place here during the witch trials? I mean, we're talking about a town where innocent people were accused of witchcraft, imprisoned, and executed. All because of fear and mass hysteria. If you believe in the paranormal, could all that suffering have left some kind of energy behind? Or is there something else going on here?
