[00:00:00] Hi there, and welcome to Out There: A Cryptid Podcast. I'm Josh, and today we're doing two mini-episodes. First, we're diving into what really happened at Bayside Marketplace, where a chaotic New Year's scene that was said to just be fireworks and a fight quickly turned into one of the Internet's most debated mysteries.
[00:00:23] Then, we're heading back in time to explore the haunting connected to the Eastern Airlines Flight 401 crash. Let's dive in.
[00:01:08] So, as you can see, we're trying something new today. Sometimes when I'm writing an episode, I get to a point where there's just not anything else to cover, and it ends up being way shorter than a full episode. And usually, those cases just get put on the chopping block. But, I had this idea where, instead of forcing them into full-length episodes, we could combine a couple of cases I've been wanting to cover for a while now.
[00:01:34] So today, we're doing mini-episodes. Think two stories, one episode. In this episode, we're diving into two very different cases that both left people seriously questioning what they experienced. But, before we get into the stories, don't forget to shop our merch now on Amazon. We have t-shirts, a mug, sweatshirts, and hopefully much more to come. The link can be found in the description of this episode, or on our Instagram.
[00:02:04] We'll get into the Bayside Marketplace incident, right after this. Miami, Florida is a city known for its nightlife, its waterfront views, and just a constant kind of energy. Right in the middle of downtown sits Bayside Marketplace, this open-air shopping center right along the water, where you have restaurants, shops, live music, and just crowds of people pretty much all the time.
[00:02:33] It's one of those places where locals and tourists all kind of blend together, especially at night when everything feels a little louder and more alive. On holidays, like New Year's, that energy gets turned up even more, with huge crowds, fireworks going off, and people just packed into the area celebrating.
[00:02:57] It can feel chaotic, but in a way that is expected for a place like this, especially in a city like Miami. Bayside Marketplace isn't your typical indoor mall, though. It's an open-air shopping center right along the waterfront, with walkways that wind between stores, restaurants, and bars, all looking out over the marina.
[00:03:20] You've got boats docked just steps away, live music playing, people sitting outside, and crowds constantly moving through the space. On New Year's Day 2024, that kind of normal chaos took a turn that people are still trying to explain. What started as a crowded night quickly shifted into something way more intense.
[00:03:46] But, almost immediately, something about the situation felt off. Video started circulating online showing people running through Bayside. Police cars flooding the streets. Lights flashing from every direction. Witnesses described hearing what sounded like gunshots. Others said fireworks. And some people couldn't even explain what they had just seen.
[00:04:11] Only, that something caused the entire crowd to panic at once. Within minutes, the area was swarmed with officers. Far more than most people would expect for a typical disturbance. And, as the footage spread, people watching from the outside began to notice something strange.
[00:04:33] In one of the clips, near the center of all the chaos, there appeared to be a dark figure moving in a way that didn't quite match the people around it. At first, it was easy to dismiss. But, the more the video was shared, slowed down, and picked apart frame by frame, the more people started to question what they were actually looking at.
[00:04:59] But, we need to start with what was happening on the inside. At first, it was just noise. People inside Bayside Marketplace described hearing loud pops echoing through the area. The kind that could have been fireworks. Or, something else entirely. Then, the crowd shifted. What had been a packed high energy scene suddenly turned tense. And, within seconds, people started running.
[00:05:29] Some didn't even know what they were running from. Only, that everyone else was moving and they need to get out. Videos from inside show groups of people sprinting past storefronts. Screams of terror and confusion spreading faster without any explanation. Some said they thought there was a shooter. Others said it was just kids setting off fireworks. But, in that moment, no one seemed sure.
[00:05:56] But, videos taken from outside show entire streets lined with officers. Way more than most people would expect for something. That, at least at first, sounded like a disturbance. Or, even fireworks. Within a short amount of time, the police presence had grown to a level that immediately raised questions online. Police cars were flooding into the area from every direction. Lights flashing. And, sirens cutting through the noise.
[00:06:26] And, when you look at the photos and videos, you can see why this caused so much speculation. Because, it truly looks like every single police vehicle in Miami showed up. So, now people watching these clips weren't just focused on what happened inside the mall anymore. They were asking why so many officers had responded. And, what kind of situation would require that kind of reaction. That is when the story started to shift.
[00:06:56] Because, as those videos spread, attention moved away from the fight and the panic. And, toward something else entirely. And, then there's that clip that really took off online. The one where some viewers claim you can see a large, dark figure near the center of the scene. And, it's interesting because they say, when slowed down, it looks unusually tall.
[00:07:21] With some even claiming it was 8 to 10 feet in height. That's when the story really started to spiral. Across TikTok and Reddit, people began sharing theories that what was caught in that footage wasn't human at all. Some claimed the figure looked like it was glitching or shifting as it moved. Others said there were multiple figures, not just one.
[00:07:49] And, from there, the rumors only got more extreme. With people saying that whatever was there, was being confronted, or even shot at. Other claims started spreading, just as fast. Some people said the airspace over Miami had been temporarily shut down that night. Others insisted that there had to be something more going on to justify the level of police response seen in the videos.
[00:08:17] But, here's where things get even more frustrating. And, honestly, a big part of why this story hasn't gone away. Despite how many officers were on the scene, there's never been any widely released body cam footage from inside the incident. No clear CCTV footage from within the marketplace, either. What exists publicly is mostly distant clips, partial angles,
[00:08:45] and recordings taken by bystanders. And, the lack of clear footage leaves a lot of room for interpretation. Because, when you look at the official explanation, police have consistently said this was a large group of teens fighting and setting off fireworks, which caused panic and led to be a heavy response. According to them, there were no aliens, no creatures,
[00:09:13] nothing beyond a chaotic situation that escalated quickly. But, for some people, that explanation doesn't fully match what they believe they're seeing in those clips. And, that's where this case really sits. Somewhere between a real but chaotic event and something the internet has reshaped into much bigger. As all of this was spreading, people started coming forward claiming they were there that night. But, like most cases, like this,
[00:09:43] the accounts don't all line up. One Reddit user, Quantumanium Waken, described being at Bayside with her husband, saying, quote,
[00:10:14] The thing that always been on my mind, Bayside is not really a mall. At all. It's more of an open-air market with lots of restaurants and entertainment, speedboat rides, etc. It sits directly on the bay. I can't help but think if something wanted to crawl out of the ocean, this would be the place to do it. Another user, JY underscore Jelly,
[00:10:43] described watching from above and seeing something much more grounded. From their perspective, they said, quote, From my POV, I was on the balcony of a condo on 50 Biscayne with full view of Bayfront Park below. I hear fireworks being shot off behind the building. Then a couple minutes later, I see approximately 20 people sprinting across the street into Bayfront Park. A couple police cars drive into the park but are blocked
[00:11:13] by the trees. The group of people gathered under the cover of the amphitheater area, then slowly dispersed onto different directions. It was still lively out, so a lot of people were able to just walk into the crowd and escape. I personally don't believe the stories since I literally saw the kids run across the street and try and hide from the cops. And that contrast is really what defines this case.
[00:11:43] Depending on where you were standing or even what clip you saw online, it becomes a completely different story. What makes it even more interesting is that this wasn't entirely isolated. A similar type of crowd panic and police response reportedly happened in the same area the year before in 2023, just without the same level of attention online. So, that raises the question of whether this is just what happens
[00:12:13] when large crowds, fireworks, and holiday chaos collide in a place like this, or whether something about this particular night pushed it into something people still can't quite agree on. And just to add on my own thoughts, I actually was in Miami about two weeks before this happened, and there's something about that city that really does feel busy in a very specific way. It's almost electric all the time, especially in areas like downtown,
[00:12:43] where everything is just constantly moving. So, I can understand how a situation like this could escalate quickly, just because of the environment itself. That being said, I do still find it really strange how many police cars showed up in those videos. It almost looks overwhelming from the outside, but I could also see how, if there were reports of gunshots or something similar, they would respond as if it could be
[00:13:12] something much more serious, like a potential bombing or active threat situation. What I do find harder to explain, though, is the lack of clear footage from inside. Because in situations like this, people film everything, even in chaotic moments, even when they're running, even when things are scary. There's usually multiple angles, live streams, body cam releases, I mean, something. And here,
[00:13:41] there just isn't much of that at all. At the same time, though, without more solid evidence, I don't think we can really jump to anything like an alien attack or something unexplainable. It feels more like one of those situations where chaos, timing, and social media all kind of collide and turned a normal incident into something much bigger online. online. But at the end of the day, we're still left with the same problem.
[00:14:11] A handful of unclear videos, no complete public footage, and a story that changes depending on who's telling it. Some people see a chaotic but explainable situation, others see something that doesn't fully line up. And without a single version of events that ties everything together, the truth just sits somewhere in between. A real event that somehow became something much bigger once it hit the internet.
[00:14:40] We'll get into the haunting of Flight 401 right after this. Every single day in the United States, thousands of flights take off and land safely. Millions of people step onto airplanes. Some are heading to work, some are going home, and others are chasing vacations they have been looking forward to for months. For a lot of people, flying is just a routine. You board the plane, find your seat, maybe scroll
[00:15:10] on your phone, and before you know it, you're landing somewhere new. But for others, it still feels exciting. The moment the plane lifts off the ground, that feeling of being thousands of feet in the air. Like, for a few hours, you are somewhere only superheroes and birds could be. Now, imagine you are on one of those flights, everything feels completely normal, you hear the steady hum of the engines, flight attendants moving through the aisles,
[00:15:40] quiet conversations all around you. Then you hear a voice, right behind you. It's a clear voice, and close, like someone is trying to get your attention. You turn, expecting to see a crew member standing there, but there's no one. Maybe you brush it off at first, until later, when someone else mentions they heard it too. And then you find out something that makes your stomach drop.
[00:16:10] The voice they heard, belonged to someone who was not supposed to be on that plane. Because, they had already died. This is not just a ghost story. It is a case tied to a real tragedy. The crash of Eastern Airlines Flight 401, and the spirits that seem to linger with different parts of the plane. The story starts on December 29, 1972.
[00:16:40] Eastern Airlines Flight 401 was a regularly scheduled flight traveling from New York to Miami, with 163 passengers and 13 crew members on board. It was operated by Eastern Airlines, which at the time was one of the largest airlines in the United States. In the cockpit were three highly experienced crew members, Captain Bob Loft, First Officer Albert Stockstill, and Flight Engineer Don Repo.
[00:17:10] These were seasoned professionals with thousands of hours of flight time, and nothing about this flight was supposed to be out of the ordinary. Everything was going smoothly as the plane approached Miami International Airport late that night. At around 1130 p.m., the crew began preparing for landing. landing. But when they lowered the landing gear, a small green indicator light that was supposed to confirm the nose gear was locked into place did not turn on.
[00:17:40] It may sound minor, but in aviation, something like that is taken very seriously. So, instead of continuing the landing, the crew decided to circle and figure out what was going on. While they were focused on that issue, the plane was set on autopilot. But at some point, it was accidentally disengaged or adjusted without anyone realizing it. And the aircraft slowly began to descend.
[00:18:10] There were no alarms immediately going off, nothing that made it obvious in that moment that something was wrong. By the time the crew realized what was happening, it was already too late. At approximately 11.42pm, the plane crashed into the Florida Everglades, just west of Miami. The impact was devastating. And out of the 176 people on
[00:18:38] board, 101 lost their lives, including Captain Bob Loft and flight engineer Don Repo. What makes this story even more unsettling is that investigators later determined the cause was not a major failure, but something incredibly small. A malfunctioning light bulb, combined with a moment of distraction. And for most aviation stories, that would be where it
[00:19:08] ends. But in this case, it was only the beginning. In the aftermath of the flight crash, the aircraft itself was completely destroyed and obviously could not be put back into service. But not everything was lost. Some components from the wreckage were recovered, inspected, and considered usable. According to multiple reports, certain parts from the plane were then installed into
[00:19:37] other aircraft operated by Eastern Airlines. Airlines. Now, on paper, that is not unusual. Airlines reuse parts all the time, as long as they are deemed safe. But this is where the story takes a turn that no one could have expected. Because not long after those parts were put into other planes, strange reports started to come in. And one of the theories that came out of this is what makes it so
[00:20:06] unsettling. The idea that whatever happened that night, did not just end in the Everglades. That somehow, something stayed attached to those parts. Almost like the energy of that moment, that tragedy, was carried with them. And when those parts were placed onto new planes, it brought something with them. Almost like they never really left. Not long after
[00:20:35] the Eastern Airlines Flight 401 crash, reports started servicing from employees of Eastern Airlines. And what makes these stories so unsettling is that many of them came from trained professionals. One of the earliest and most talked about sightings came from a flight attendant who was working a flight on an L-1011, the same model aircraft as Flight 401. while preparing food in the galley, she claimed to see
[00:21:05] a man sitting quietly, who she did not recognize. What stood out was that he was wearing an Eastern Airlines uniform. But he was not supposed to be assigned to that flight. When she spoke to him, he reportedly did not respond at first. And when another crew member was brought over, the man suddenly vanished. Later, when she described him, she was told the description matched
[00:21:35] Flight Engineer Don Rebo. Another well-known incident involved a captain and a flight engineer on a separate flight. Before takeoff, the flight engineer went down into the avianonics bay and reportedly saw a man already there, calmly working. The man looked up and told him something along the lines of not needing to worry about pre-flight checks.
[00:22:04] The engineer was confused because no one else should have been there. When he later described the man, he was again said to match Don Rebo. In some versions of this story, the warning was taken seriously and the flight was checked again, allegedly preventing a potential issue, although there was no official record confirming that part. There are also reports involving Captain Bob Loft. In one account, a flight attendant
[00:22:34] claimed to see him sitting in first class before takeoff, apparently completely solid and real. She assumed he was a deadheading crew member or someone hitching a ride, which is not uncommon in aviation. But when she went to notify the captain and they returned together, the seat was empty. When she later saw a picture of Bob Loft, she reportedly identified him immediately as the man she had seen
[00:23:03] on her flight. What makes these sightings stand out is that they were not described as shadowy figures or quick glimpses. People claim these individuals looked completely real, like any other crew member on board, until the moment they disappeared. And in multiple cases, different employees who did not know each other gave similar descriptions. Now, in terms of actual evidence, this
[00:23:33] is where things get complicated. Most of these accounts were never officially documented by the airline, and Eastern Airlines strongly denied that any hauntings were taking place. A lot of what we know comes from employee testimonies, and was later compiled and popularized in the book, The Ghost of Flight 401, by John G. Fuller. Some employees even claimed they were discouraged from talking about it publicly. This is where the
[00:24:03] story shifts a little, because not everyone agrees on what actually happened after the crash. While the reports of sightings connected to Eastern Airlines Flight 401 crash are widely circulated, a lot of what we know about the so-called hauntings does not come from official investigation reports or airline documentation. Instead, much of it does come from the employee's stories that were shared over time and then later compiled into Fuller's book. And that distinction
[00:24:33] matters, because it means many of these accounts are second-hand or passed along through people who heard them from others rather than directly experiencing them. In aviation, especially within a large company like Eastern Airlines, stories can spread quickly between crews, especially when they are unsettling or unusual. And over time, details can shift, combine, or become more dramatic, depending on how they are retold.
[00:25:02] It is also important to say that Eastern Airlines itself publicly denied that any paranormal activity was happening on their aircrafts. From their perspective, there was no official evidence of anything unusual behind standard reports and normal flight operations. In other words, what exists here is a gap between employee testimony and institutional records. And everything we know sits somewhere in between those two points.
[00:25:32] Now, that does not automatically disprove the stories, but it does change how they have to be understood. Because instead of a confirmed series of documented events, what you are left with is a collection of accounts, memories, and retellings that grew over time, especially after being popularized and preserved through later publications. After those early reports started circulating, the
[00:26:01] strange part is that the pattern doesn't really continue forever. The majority of the reported sightings connected to this flight seem to cluster in the years shortly after the crash, mostly in the mid to late 1970s, when the aircraft parts were still actively in use across other planes operated by the airline. But over time, the reports became less frequent. They don't completely
[00:26:30] vanish in a single moment, but they do start to fade out of common discussion. Newer crews were less likely to report anything, and eventually the story shifts from something people were allegedly experiencing firsthand to something that was mostly being retold, discussed, or referenced in connection to earlier accounts. And that is what makes this story kind of more unsettling, because it's not built on nothing. It's tied to a real
[00:27:00] event, the crash of that airline, a real airline, and real people who lost their lives that night. Even if you strip away every report, every retelling, and every layer of interpretation, you are still left with a tragedy that actually happened. But what I will say is I've always found something strange about the idea that this did not just stay in one place. I don't know if I fully believe in a literal sense, but there is something
[00:27:30] about it that sticks with you. Some paranormal researchers and theories around residual energy suggest that intense emotional or traumatic events can, in a sense, imprint themselves onto objects or environments. Almost like a moment of extreme tragedy does not just disappear, but leaves a kind of echo behind. And if that idea is even partly true, then this becomes one of the most unsettling examples of it.
[00:27:59] Because in this case, parts of the aircraft were reportedly reused in other planes, meaning pieces of something tied to that final moment were physically carried forward. Some people believe that if anything like that exists, it is not necessarily that spirits are trapped forever, but that something about them or the energy tied to them could have moved with those parts. Or maybe nothing stayed at all and
[00:28:29] everything simply ended the way it always does, with loss fading into history, and the aircraft eventually being retired from service. But even with all of that said, there is still the question you can't fully shake. Because if people really did see and hear things they could not explain, and if those moments really did line up across different crews and different flights, then you are left wondering what it all means.
[00:28:58] And maybe that is just where it's going to stay. Because who knows, the next time you're on a flight, sitting quietly while the engines hum and the cabin lights dim, you might hear a voice behind you that you cannot quite place. And when you turn around, there might be no one there. Or maybe, just maybe, it is the captain of a flight that never made it to its destination.
